6 easy tips for designing your own mantel.

  1. Vary the heights of things on your mantel, if everything is the same height it can be boring.

  2. Connect the main piece/s of art to the mantel.. meaning hang it lower than you think..so the mantel and art are visually connected

  3. Group small mantel objects in 3 - on one side of mantel or 3 in center. Make sure those 3 things are varying in height. If you prefer symmetry, find 2 matching objects and put them on either side of the mantel for balance

  4. Try non-traditional ways of displaying things, such as: leaning art and mirrors in layers against the wall, overlapping or putting small things on stands. A stand can be anything like; a stack of books, a vase or bowl upside down, etc.

  5. Resist the urge to have a single mirror over your mantel, they tend to only reflect the ceiling (from the vantage point of sitting on a sofa). It’s important to have a strong focal point/visual anchor above your fireplace. If you don’t have art, frame a piece of wrapping paper that you love! If you want a mirror, lean it on the mantel with a layer of art in front or group a smaller one with other art pieces on the wall.

  6. Change your mantel objects with the season. It’s great to use found objects of the season like, pine cones, rocks, red branches, flowers, branches, jars of shells or sand etc.
